We have students from 6 years old up to retired senior citizens. Call us now to discuss this more.
Is Rock the only style you teach?
No, we specialise in many other areas e.g. Pop, Jazz, Country and Musical Theatre. It’s about getting the right teacher for you.
Do I have to have natural ability (talent)?
No. Anyone can learn to sing or play an instrument. All you need is the desire and the motivation to practice.
I'm not very confident, does it matter?
No. In fact, most people are very nervous about learning to sing or play an instrument in front of someone else. Our lessons are all one-on-one and our teachers are fantastic - they make you feel really comfortable. All teachers were students once too. They're all very friendly and honest and you'll be surprised how quickly you'll settle in. Just pop in and visit and ask any of our students.
Do you teach absolute beginners or advanced?
We all have to start somewhere. We have a lot of absolute beginners who have just become interested in playing an instrument. We also teach professional musicians looking to brush up on their technique as everyone can always improve.
Do you teach how to read music?
Yes, we mix a variety of practical and theory. Your teacher can help you with a programme , goals suited for you.
Do I have to be able to read music?
No. However, if you want to get serious about your music and become the best musician you can be then learning to read music is a great step in that direction. Nevertheless, it is true that many great musicians still make great music without being able to read music.
What happens in a lesson?
Every instrument differs slightly and the direction you wish to go will play a role in what you do in your lessons. It would be best to book a no-obligation lesson and discuss your interests with one of our teachers.
Do you have a set curriculum?
No. There are a lot of different avenues and styles in the music industry so we work closely with each individual student to make sure we are guiding them in the direction that they choose to explore. Lessons are tailored to each individual.
Do I have to do a lot of scales?
Yes and no. Scales are a musical tool so, if you wish, we do teach them because they help you understand your instrument and so get the best out of it. In this way you will become a finer musician more quickly. But it depends on your musical direction.
If you don't want to do scales then that's fine. We can teach you in a way which suits you. This is something you would discuss with your teacher.
How long does it take to learn?
Everyone's different.
All teachers at the School of Rock work in the industry and have exceptional playing and teaching skills. This means that you will learn faster with your teacher (and avoid developing bad habits) than you would somewhere else or on your own at home.
However, it still depends a lot on just how much you practice. Your teacher is your own private library source and it depends what you do with that information between lessons
Do you hire instruments
No we do not—The school has its own supply of guitars and basses you may borrow for your lesson We Recommend — Size Music
Do I have to own an instrument?
Not necessarily but practising is what makes you develop as a musician and you can't practice if you don't have an instrument.
The following guide may help:
Keyboard / Piano
We have a couple of keyboards at the School of Rock for piano or keyboard lessons.Access to a piano or keyboard outside lessons would greatly help your progress. We also have electric pianos with weighted keys (like a piano)
Guitar
It would be usual for you to bring your own instrument to guitar lessons. We do have a limited supply of electric and acoustic guitars.
Singing
The only thing you need to bring to singing lessons is your voice.
Drums
We don't expect you to bring a drum kit to lessons. There is a drum kit at the school for you to have your lessons on. Please bring your own sticks.
Regarding practicing outside lessons:
- you can start off with just a practice pad and a set of sticks.
- the next step would be to purchase a snare, kick drum and cymbals.
- you can add toms and other items later as required.
You can rent or purchase instruments with our exclusive student discount at Rock Music downstairs from us.
